Our Women in Tech series continues, that celebrates the women across our business who are helping shape the future of tech.
This series shares a Q&A with one of our colleagues, offering a glimpse into their journey, the projects they’re proud of, and the advice they’d give to others starting out in the industry. These aren’t just stories, they’re reflections of the values we live by: Progression, Integrity, Collaboration, and Ownership.
Next up, we've been talking with Elizabeth Hurley, GIS Consultant.
1. Can you tell us about your journey into tech and what first attracted you to the industry?
I have always loved problem solving and understanding how things fit together. As a kid, I was fascinated by bridges, and collecting maps, so it wasn't a surprise when I ended up studying Civil Engineering! It was there that I discovered GIS and Data Analytics, and later Public Health Informatics, which really resonated with me because they combine analytical thinking with real world impact. Tech is a fascinating, constantly evolving industry that touches nearly every aspect of life, and it's potential to create positive, tangible change is what continues to motivate and excite me.
2. Have there been any key moments, people, or opportunities that shaped your progression within the business or your career so far?
I've been incredibly fortunate that my career has taken me to several countries and has given me the opportunity to work with people from all over the world. From building hydraulic models of Dublin's water network, to creating COVID-19 Pandemic Response dashboards in Switzerland and the U.S., and most recently to mapping Limerick's Food Environment to help fight food poverty, each role and project has shaped how I think about the power of data and technology, as well as the importance of diverse perspectives in developing impactful, meaningful solutions. The people I’ve worked alongside and the real world challenges we’ve tackled have been hugely influential in my progression so far, and I’m excited to see where the next chapter of my career will take me.
3. What skills or mindset do you think have been most important in helping you navigate a career in tech?
Adaptability! Tech is constantly evolving, and being willing to learn, adapt, and become comfortable with change and uncertainty has helped me navigate different roles, sectors, and challenges throughout my career.
4. What advice would you give to women considering a career in tech or applying for roles they might not feel “fully qualified” for yet?
I don't believe anyone is ever truly 'fully qualified' for a role. So much learning happens on the job and through working alongside people with different experiences and perspectives. A colleague once described a particularly complex project as being like 'building a plane whilst flying it', and that really stuck with me — everyone is figuring things out as they go! Curiosity, adaptability, and an eagerness to learn, combined with a solid technical foundation, are far more important than ticking every box on a job description (in my opinion 😄).
5. Which of our values (Progression, Integrity, Collaboration, Ownership) speaks to you the most and why?
Collaboration - The projects and roles are nothing without the people you get to commiserate and troubleshoot with on the challenges, and celebrate with on the successes no matter how big or small.
